In a state of utter terror, I froze, hoping whatever creature lurked at my back would think I was dead, or a tree, or some wisp of debris caught in a branch—anything but a helpless woman. Even as I held my breath, I knew it would do no good. I was there for a reason. I did not know if it was better not to see what lurked behind me. Despite my inaction, the warm breath continued to travel over the plane of my skin.
